Yesterday was the end of an era. I said goodbye to my Ford Escape, Big Red. I got it when I was 16 (many thanks to my amazing parents for that one). I drove it my Junior and Senior year of high school (and gave rides to as many people as I could fit in the car - legally and illegally at times… also, gas was under a dollar a gallon then so it didn’t matter). When I graduated high school and moved to college I wasn’t allowed to bring a car with me (both the rules of my parents and the college - freshmen aren’t allowed to have cars due to lack of parking). Big Red became my brothers car (who was 16 at the time). He drove it for his Junior and Senior year while, after my freshman year, I sported a 2002 black Jetta that was in the shop more than I drove it. After about 9 months of driving said Jetta, I totaled it (and by I, I actually mean some asshole who side swiped me on I-4 near Orlando and then left - hit and run, cool). I broke several bones, including my foot and ankle so I couldn’t drive for a while. Instead of buying a new car with the money I got from insurance, I paid off a student loan and Big Red became mine again. She has been an absolute peach for the past 10 years (okay, really the first 9 years because, let’s be honest, she was an asshole this past year and cost me more money than she was even worth). We have seen many sights together. She never judged me for singing as loud as I possibly could. She always made me feel safe and sporty. She was always very comfortable….except during the summer because dark leather against bare legs is painful as hell. She was just the best. I hope she makes some other person very happy. Goodbye, Big Red. It’s been real.
